MBA PE Full-Time International Explained

The MBA is presented as a full-time course only to international students residing in Port Elizabeth.

Course Duration: 18 months

Class Presentation:

  • Four evening classes per week: 17:30 – 20:30;
  • The first year (12 months) is divided into three (3) trimesters (12 weeks per trimester). Full-time international students will complete four (4) modules per trimester; and
  • In the second year (6 months) full-time students will be required to complete three electives and their treatise.
  • Venue: NMMU Business School, 20 Bird Street, Central, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

    Group work: All students accepted onto the MBA programme are assigned to a group. Group members are selected and assigned according to their professional expertise and experience so as to best replicate a management team in the working environment. MBA students will work together in their groups over the 18 month period. Full time students are required to meet with their group on a daily basis before evening classes.

    Electives: The final year comprises of three electives as well as your treatise. The electives are presented in Port Elizabeth. An elective is normally presented over a period of four or five days (Monday to Friday).

    Tests and Exams: All tests and exams are written in Port Elizabeth.

    Admission Criteria

    At the NMMU Business School prospective MBA candidates will be put through a rigorous selection process to ensure that only the best , most likely to succeed candidates are selected.

    International Students

    International applicants should be aware that obtaining study permits from the South African authorities can take approximately two months from the date of receiving notification of acceptance onto the programme.

    In order to qualify for a place on the NMMU MBA the following criteria must be met:

    • A three year national diploma or degree at an NQF level 6 is the minimum requirement. Official and certified English translations of all supporting documents should be submitted with your application. If you have obtained qualifications from a tertiary institution outside of South Africa you will need to obtain verification of the degree/diploma and it’s equivalence to a South African undergraduate degree by contacting the South African Embassy or Consulate in your country, or the Human Sciences Research Council in Pretoria, South Africa.     • Successful applicants must have three years managerial working experience or five years business related working experience.
    • Be fluent in English. Applicants who are not fluent in English will be required to produce an English Proficiency certificate to verify their English language skills.
    • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). All applicants are required to complete the selection test as part of the application process. Students writing the GMAT test need to obtain a score of 520 or higher. GMAT testing centres: www.mba.com

    Application Process & Deadlines

    Application Process

    Once you have considered the MBA admission requirements and feel qualified to apply for the MBA degree, you can begin the application process.

    1. Submit your application forms and supporting documentation via email to the NMMU Business School business.school@nmmu.ac.za
    2. First review – Once you have submitted all the required documents, your application will be reviewed to ensure that you meet the minimum acceptance criteria.
    3. Receive a notification of the first review outcome.
    4. If you meet the criteria for the first review you will be contacted to make arrangements to write the GMAT test in a location near you.
    5. Successful candidates need to obtain a score of 520 on the GMAT test.
    6. Final approval of your MBA application.
    7. Registration – You will receive a letter of acceptance onto the MBA programme. In adherence to the South African Government rules and regulations, your final registration is subject to producing a valid study permit.

    What are the fees?

    What is the closing date for applications?

    The closing date for International Student applications is 31 October.

    How long will the application process take before I will have a final answer?

    It will take between 15 – 30 days from the moment that you hand in your completed application to receive a written letter from us informing you about the result.

    What is the first step in the application process?

    The first step is to complete and submit the on-line enquiry form.

    When does the programme start?

    The programme starts in the first week of February of each year and an academic year consists of three 12 week trimesters. The first trimester starts in February; the 2nd trimester May and the 3rd trimester August. There is a recess from December – January.

    How many classes will I have to attend each week?

    Full-time students attend four evening classes per week from 17:30 – 20:30. Part time students attend two classes per week from 17:30 – 20:30. Block release students attend video conferencing classes every second Saturday morning and attend three study visits of three days each – at the NMMU Business School, Bird Street Campus, Port Elizabeth.

    What do I have to pay and when?

    You will be required to pay a non-refundable application fee with your application and a fee for your SHL/GMAT test.

    Can I pay in installments?

    Yes, the NMMU MBA fees can be paid in three installments per year, which makes it a very affordable option for students who are not being sponsored.

    How much work is involved – hours per week?

    A typical week for a full time/part time MBA student will consist of 12 hours and 6 hours contact teaching hours respectively. In addition, the full time students will need to spend at least another 28 hours and the part time students another 12 hours per week working on your own or in your study group.

    Can I receive credits for modules completed in other qualifications on a Masters level?

    The Higher Education Qualification Committee (HEQC) allows accredited MBA programmes to only afford credits for MBA modules completed on another accredited MBA Programme. Credits to a maximum of 7 of the 15 MBA modules can be obtained in this way.
